The installation features two projectors that map mycelial structures across the room's walls and ceiling using advanced video mapping software, precisely designed to integrate with the space. Prior to projection, the room is transformed with organic materials—roots and tree prunings from the surrounding area—creating an immersive mycelium underworld. Accompanying the visuals is an evocative soundtrack composed by elena victoria, blending a voice-over of selected quotes from Let's Become Fungal by Yasmine Ostendorf-Rodriguez with elements of musique concrète and feedback loops. This audio-visual experience prompts reflection on how our human ways of life impact the non-human world, even the invisible organisms beneath us. The installation encourages the audience to explore unconventional and speculative ideas of symbiosis in interspecies relationships, fostering an inclusive dialogue about the decisions we make that affect more-than-human beings. The work was invited to be presented for the first time in the second phase of the project Exploring Conscious Territories at the FABRIKculture in Hégenheim during the week of ArtBasel Fair 2024. Throughout human history, water has woven intricate stories, fueled legends, and laid the foundation for entire cosmogonies. In many traditions, its transformative power transcends the purely material, embodying a deeper connection between humanity and the natural world. Across various civilizations, water has often been personified as a female figure, reflecting its role as a container, giver, and generator of life. This interpretation, deeply rooted in ancient pagan and indigenous beliefs, stands in stark contrast to the historical subjugation of women in patriarchal societies—an imbalance further exacerbated by industrialization and capitalism. In Power of Water, elena victoria combines video, sound, and light to explore the representations of female deities in both Northern European and Caribbean cultures, specifically through the figures of mermaids. Through this installation, she investigates how the voices of these deities, symbolizing strength, mythology, and the sacred, can be intertwined in a postcolonial revitalization. Water becomes the central element in the projection, connecting the viewer to these cultural representations in an abstract and timeless way. The sensory experience of the audience is enhanced as the water is not only projected on the walls but also physically present beneath the metal floor of the exhibition space, which takes place inside a docked fishing boat in Hamburg. Using her deep musical background, pastor weaves an immersive soundscape that explores the hidden, intricate web of relationships within our environment—those that extend beyond the limits of human perception. Through free improvisation and haunting vocalizations, she transports the audience into the depths of the Amazon. Here, she conjures an imaginary sonic landscape, invoking the unseen forces that shape the delicate fabric of our world. The performance asks us to contemplate the limits of our understanding and challenges us to perceive the interconnectedness of life, not only with our minds but with our spirits—beyond the boundaries of human cognition. Collaborating with her friend, Ken Asahina, she carried him on her back up the mountain, symbolizing a shift in gender roles and a new narrative for this historical practice. As they reached the peak, an old chair from the Sesselträger era awaited them. She gently lowered Ken, and together they embraced, hand in hand, reflecting on the journey and the bonds formed through their shared effort. Similarly, when air is expelled through instruments or devices, it creates evocative soundscapes. In a dialogue of sound through improvisation with wind instruments and vocalizations inspired by shamanic chants, the performers established a spiritual connection that transcended boundaries, linking the global north with the global south. Through the act of improvisation, new narratives were woven that dismantled cultural and historical barriers, painting a sonic landscape that, combined with the sounds generated from natural materials, invited the audience to experience a more intimate communion with their surroundings, rekindling a deeper connection to the Earth. The performance encouraged reflection on the inherent beauty and harmony in the interaction between the divine and the earthly, creating a sonic abstraction of anthropocentric paradigms and narratives related to the natural world. To conclude the concert, a group of children, who had previously participated in a workshop on making musical instruments inspired by the traditional crafts of Amazonian indigenous peoples, joined Hannes and elena victoria on stage to create music together with their handmade instruments. But what if we weren't the sole storytellers? What if we examined the narratives from other perspectives—the traces left behind by other species, elements, and matter? Could the story of the planet be told differently, not solely through human understanding, but through time itself and in ways that transcend the human mind? Inspired by the legend of pilgrims purifying themselves in the natural stone grotto of Falkensteinkirche, elena victoria embarks on a journey through the Schleifstein, documenting its textures, history, and the passage of countless pilgrims. Simultaneously, an ambient sound composition, combined with selected passages from Michel Serres book The Natural Contract, resonates through the room, narrated in the artist's own voice. Complementing the immersive experience, a landscape of carefully arranged cut logs occupies the exhibition space, accompanied by the captivating scent of palo santo incense. Through this multi-sensory installation, titled In Search of a New Symbiosis, elena victoria invites contemplation on the urgent need to reestablish a harmonious connection between humanity and nature, blurring the boundaries between the real and the fictional, while questioning the impact of technology on our relationship with the natural world. Hamburg, 2020 elena victoria puts photography, video, performance and installations into dialogue to show her interest in current affairs. Influenced by her career in journalism, she creates ways to express emotions by setting analogies with elements of nature, to reflect on issues such as migration and feminism. In her latest works the presence of nature became yet more intensive by placing it as a key frame. A video mapping of leaves, which resemble the tropical rainforest, creates a visual contrast between sober realities and a romanticized idea of paradisiacal nature. Projected on a layer of rudimentary plastic foil, it is reminding of simple constructions found on places of conflict like borders with massive traffic of illegal walkers. The history of migration is cruel, even in the present. We listen to a series of interviews with witnesses of the Simon Bolivar's Bridge, the most transited border point between Venezuela and Colombia. Voices speak to us, telling stories about the immeasurable political and social collapse of Venezuela. Paraiso Tropical is a comment on her home country’s geopolitical agenda. With a visceral and intimate imprint, which is often to be found in her artwork, Elena Pastor brings some of her personal path on the topic, which finally addresses it to everyday life, familiarity and how usual the act of migration is.This exhibition was presented as part of the Nominees Exhibition for the Arbeitsstipendium Hamburg 2021, where Elena Victoria Pastor was selected as one of the ten final award recipients. images: Pedro Torres &amp; courtesy of the artist
